Overview

Our Cape Verde Self-Catering Holiday on Boavista in 8 days is the perfect trip if you prefer to be independent and want to avoid the crowds.

Boavista is laid-back and has some of the quietest beaches on Cape Verde. We have also included car hire so you can explore the island at your own pace.

Between December and April, Sal Rei is the place to be if you want to spot humpback whales and their calves, or from mid-June to late October you can see loggerhead turtles crawling up the beaches to lay their eggs. Nurse sharks also make an appearance in the quieter bays.

In the evening you could sit around the main square in Sal Rei, listen to live music, and watch the world go by.

Trust us to look after you. All of our Cape Verde holidays are protected by our ATOL licence and our Covid promise.

Itinerary

Depart Heathrow and fly via Lisbon to Boavista in Cape Verde. On arrival transfer to your self-catering apartment at Ca'Nicola where you stay for 7 nights.
This is a free day to relax and discover Sal Rei on your own. There are quite a few activities we can organise for you as well during your stay on Boavista, varying from turtle and whale watching (seasonal), surfing, horse riding or snorkelling. If you are thinking of going in the water for water sports or simply swimming, do be aware of the strong currents and always ask your hotel where and whether it is safe to swim.
We have organised for your car to be delivered to your casa. The world (island!) is now your oyster to explore on your own. Why not venture to the north and visit Cabo Santa Maria (mysterious shipwreck), stop in Bofareira to buy some snacks and visit Shark Baye, where you can see nurse sharks. Top tip: stock up on food and beverages before you head out, as shops will be limited along the way.
Another day to explore the island. Perhaps visit the south this time. Drive to Rabil, the old capital of Boavista to visit the pottery; and Sao Roque, the oldest church on the island. Marvel the starkness of Deserto de Viana, a sand desert east of Rabil and the rock formation at Praia de Varandinha. At the end drive to Santa Monica beach - but be aware as rescue facilities are non-existent here and there's a strong off-shore wind. Remember to stay on the roads- it is illegal to drive on the beaches in Cape Verde.
Today you could go to the most easterly part of the island and visit Morro Negro Lighthouse. If the road becomes too difficult to drive then you should consider walking the last part to the lighthouse. On you way back you could visit Baia das Gatas where occasionally tiger sharks have been spotted.
You could do some hiking today and drive towards Povoacao Velha, and park your car closest to Santo Antonio peak (379m). The best way up is to skirt around the mountain clockwise and ascend it from the east.
Your last day to relax and explore the deserted beaches of Boavista.
A day at leisure until it's time to drive to the airport and fly home via Lisbon.
